MISSION VENTURE FUND
Mission ventures are locally trusted, innovative, culturally fluent, agile, and cost effective, with no less commitment to excellence than their international peers. But they are stretched operationally and under-capitalized, receiving only a sliver of global funding directly, possibly as little as 2 - 4%. Why? Capital lacks courage, favoring international organizations in safer contexts while overlooking local, indigenous entrepreneurs who struggle to access capital and coaching. As a result, tens of thousands of mission ventures are overlooked and underfunded.
The Mission Venture Fund seeks to address this paradox by investing in precisely those contexts where transformational ministry is most needed and most effective. Imagine a group of visionary philanthropists, advisors, and coaches who come alongside these entrepreneurs to seed, catalyze and scale their ventures while also mitigating inherent risks. How might the world change?
The Mission Venture Fund brings together mission entrepreneurs with investors, advisors and coaches to strengthen and scale mission ventures in hard places. The Fund partners with startups at the pre-seed, seed and early growth stages. The Mission Venture Fund is more than capital. Our partnership involves three priorities: capital, capacity and community.
Investing in mission startups in hard places.
-
CAPITAL
The Mission Venture Fund provides philanthropic capital, leveraging local resources and enterprise when appropriate.
-
CAPACITY
The Mission Venture Fund provides context-specific coaching and capability strengthening.
-
COMMUNITY
The Mission Venture Fund strengthens the ministry community, or ecosystem, through apprenticing and peer mentoring.
HOW THE MISSION VENTURE FUND WORKS
-
Leveraging an extensive global network, the Mission Venture Fund team curates a portfolio of mission startups for potential partnership.
The Mission Venture Team facilitates interviews and high level assessments to determine potential fit.
The Mission Venture Team presents potential ventures to the Advisory Board for discussion and further vetting.
-
The Mission Venture Team presents a cohort of recommended ventures to Investment Partners at the Annual Partners Gathering, along with a summary analysis for each venture, including missional, strategic and performance goals.
Investment Partners are invited to support the cohort, or specific themes within a cohort, over a period of three years.
-
Following a relationally-led assessment, the Mission Venture Team assembles three-member coaching teams to accompany each venture in specific areas, such as, missional strategy, pacing and growth, organizational health, resource development and impact assessment.
While the coaching journey will include a set of shared core principles and processes, coaching teams will prioritize context-relevant pathways for each venture rather that relay on a one-size fits all approach.
Progress for each cohort will be reported during an annual Partners Gathering and optional quarterly calls.
